Brothers of Temple Lodge raised $1,100 towards the total of $3,000 donated to Westport EMS. The bikes are specially built for the EMS department and carry a range of emergency first response equipment, offering fast emergency services to the people of Westport.

The bikes are 2010 Fuji Police Specials and each is equipeded with JANDD Mountaineering EMS Pannier Bags and Top Medication bag. The lights and siren unit are Alerte Trailblazer III LED Emergency lights with siren.

The total combined weight of the bags is about 35lbs when loaded.

Each team of two bikes consists of a Paramedic and EMT.
Each bike carries spare tire tubes, small tool kit, air pump.

The Paramedic bike carries:

Oxygen, IV Supplies, Intubation Equipment (breathing tubes), Oxygen masks and supplies, basic bandaging equipment, Blood pressure cuffs, and Medications for Allergic reactions, cardiac emergencies, diabetic emergencies, drug over doses, and medications for breathing problems.

The EMT bike carries:

Oxygen, AED (defribulator, to shock a patients heart), Oxygen supplies, bandaging and splinting equipment, Neck collars, ice and heat packs, child birthing kit, blood pressure cuffs, medications for allergic reactions.

They offer Bike Team stand-by for large crowd events in the town of Westport and surrounding towns (Out of towns require coordination with that towns ambulance service and approval from WEMS Director). They also provide information on bike safety, proper helmet fits, and public relations and information on Emergency Medical Services and EMS Cycling.

The REQUIRED training program is from IPMBA (International Police Mountain Bike Assoc). It is a very intense 32hr training program that teaching bike control, crowd control, safe riding skills, navigating in crowds, how to ride up and down stairs and over rough terrain.

By having a bike team we can get into areas much faster than am ambulance can get to a patient to begin care and stabilize until a transport unit arrives.
